Holtec International is USGBC-NJ LEED Project of the Year - Campus

Each year, USGBC NJ recognizes and presents distinguished awards to companies and individuals that have demonstrated outstanding achievement and best practices in green building and sustainability. USA Architects and its consulting engineers will be celebrating this honor of receiving “LEED Project of the Year - Campus” at the 6th Annual Awards Gala in Somerset, NJ on May 16, 2018.

Specific concepts of sustainability were implemented into the buildings, such as using solar energy, sun shading and building angles to control daylight to the office areas, and a site selection that is a prime location to different modes of heavy goods transportation and public transportation. The Corporate HQ features a floor-to-ceiling curtain wall with limestone panels, a roof deck, a 2-story atrium lobby, multiple open meeting centers, and huddle spaces. It also includes support functions for employees such as: fitness center and locker room, and a cafe and servery. The manufacturing facility houses 200-ton cranes, a reactor test loop and the warehouse building supports the increased operational demands. 

During construction, material and waste procedures were implemented by using high levels of recycled content in the structures, low-VOC adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, floor systems, and wood/agrifiber products. The team managed to lower the embodied energy and amount of virgin materials, minimizing landfill wastes. A campus-wide construction waste management program diverted 99.5% of product waste from landfills and low-flow water fixtures have resulted in a 20% to 35% water use reduction compared to conventional buildings. Built-in sensory lighting systems and LED fixtures maximize energy conservation while the use of a glazing system provides natural light to a majority of the occupants, and contains high energy efficiency and low e-coating that improves both solar and thermal performance of the building envelope.  

The office building has performed a total of 47.7% energy cost savings, and provided an offset of 36.9% total costs renewable. Meanwhile, the manufacturing facility has saved 30.7% energy cost savings providing 31.4% offset of total energy costs renewable, and the warehouse has saved 19.6% energy costs and offset 16.4% of total energy costs renewable.

The USGBC NJ Gala promises to be a terrific opportunity for quality networking and fundraising related initiatives. Contributions given to the event will provide program and operating support for all of the chapter’s education programs, events, tours, research programs and advocacy initiatives and provide start-up funds for new green building programs and resources.

  • INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY BEST PRACTICES – MATERIALS AND RESOURCES: Humanscale Living Product Challenge (Humanscale)
  • INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY BEST PRACTICES – SUSTAINABILITY PLANNING: Village Retro: Strategy for Sustainability/Ecology/Stormwater (chambers design in partnership with Township of South Orange Village, SO Environmental Commission and SO Green Team)
