Linwood Middle School

North Brunswick Township School District

USA Architects prepared an expansion study for the district to determine the best options for a combination of new construction and renovation to accommodate elementary and middle school students. A site selection study was conducted to assess the viability of several different building options, with the resulting solution of a new school for 7th and 8th grade students to accompany the renovation of the existing middle school for 5th and 6th grade.
Phase I includes the new 7-8 school, the first school building to be built in 40 years, is part of a $77 million referendum to relieve congestion and overcrowding among the district‘s schools. The 2-story facility takes advantage of scenic views to its tree-lined border, indoor-outdoor connections via outside courtyards, maker spaces, learning labs and general classrooms and huddle spaces for collaborative engagement. The academic portion of the school is designed distinctly separate from the cafeteria, gymnasium and media center as these spaces are shared with the general community after hours.
Phase II will include extensive renovations and an addition to the existing middle school, which will house grades 5-6, as well as an Early Childhood Center and a new space for the Board of Education. By incorporating the Board of Education into the design, the District is eligible for a Department of Education grant.
